Sennheiser MX500 iPod earbud replacements

I recently needed to replace the earbuds that came with my iPod. I’ve had it for around 8 months now, and the original headphones have started to fall to pieces. The outer casing for the wires has split at the place where the two separate wires for each side join. I also began to feel a bit like a fool walking around with bright white headphones all the time.

After reading a few very good reviews I decided to go for the relatively low cost Sennheiser MX500 earbuds as a replacement.

To be perfectly honest, after using them for a couple of days, I’m fairly disappointed. Comparing the two sets side by side the Sennheisers have more clarity but the low end is severely lacking, while the iPod originals seem slightly more muffled but have a much more pronounced and clear low end.

The foamies help the headphones stick deeper into the ear, which helps with the low end to an extent, but I can’t for the life of me keep hold of those things. I lost the first one on the first day, replaced it and lost both of those on the second day.

I’m not a bass freak, but a I like to be able to hear a nice funky bass line when it’s there. The iPod headphones aren’t as good as the Sennheisers overall, but you can hear the bass when there is moderate background noise. On the bus today with the MX500s I could not hear whether there was a bass part in the music at all.
